NGO hails women in fisheries industry
Pact Malawi deputy regional director Marianna Balampama has commended women in the fishing industry in Salima for contributing towards the socioeconomic development of the district.
She expressed the sentiments on Monday in Traditional Authority Maganga in the district when her organisation celebrated the International Women’s Day with women in the fisheries industry.
Balampama said the organisation decided to hold the event with the women to appreciate their economic contribution to society.
She said: “The women are an integral part in the supply chain of fish.
“Through their participation in the industry, they have transformed their families and employed many people in the industry.”
Balampama also said the day was meant to showcase the gains women and men have achieved together.
“These two genders complement each other. We cannot talk about gender equality if men are not involved. I am happy to see men and women working together in this field,” she said.
One of the women from Mwala Gender Group, Alesi Baluwa, thanked Pact Malawi for bringing in gender-centred interventions in the fishing industry.
“The interventions have helped women achieve.
With funding from USAid, Pact Malawi is implementing Restoring Fisheries for Sustainable Livelihoods in Lake Malawi Project which seeks to conserve the freshwater biodiversity of Lake Malawi in Karonga, Rumphi, Likoma, Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota, Salima, Dedza and Mangochi districts.
